Electronic Seance was first performedby the collective in 1994 at the outdoor stage of the Galaxy Theater in front of a bustling Friday evening on Hollywood Blvd. Contrasting the tourist friendly glitz of Hollywood that night was this somber, ghost-like performance of found sound and tape loops. Information was handed out to theater gowers, shoppers, and kids in line for the opening of a Muppet movie. The information listed brief descriptions of the artists the collective was attempting to contact including Sor Juana Ines Dela Cruz, Mary Shelly, and Jimi Hendrix. When asked by one of the theater's staff if this was her first "seance", a little girl in line for a movie said "yes". Several seances followed. The collective is not 100% certain but two bizarre incidents deserve note: 1) a high pitch mumbling blared through the sound system during the Dela Cruz segment and 2) at one of the performances, props caught on fire. |
